Episode 154: Ghibli Talk - Spirited Away

A: Hello. I'm Keina.
B: Hello. I'm Moeko. This is KSU student podcast.
A: Are you OK? You look very sleepy.
B: I feel very very sleepy because I stayed up late last night.
A: Why?
B: I watched a movie named "Spirited away ". Do you know?
A: Uhh,no.
B: Wow. What a waste that you have never watch it. I recommend this movie.
A: Oh. I am getting interested in it. I will watch this movie. So can you tell me the summary of it?
B: Yes, I can. When a girl named Chihiro and her parents run through a tunnel, they meet a strange sight. Then her parents become pigs while eating strange foods. Because She is surprised from seeing pigs, she runs away and meets Haku. Haku is a hero of this movie.
A: I know this movie! The title is "Sento Chihiro no kamikakushi"in Japan. I love it.
B: Wow. Which scenes were impressive?
A: Well. The most impressive scene as the movie is the farewell scene between Chihiro and Haku. I'm sad because she can't see him again. How about you?
B: The scene where her parents become pigs is very scary scene. When they latch onto the food, I think their face is ugly.  This is my most impressive scene.
A: I remember it. I'm scared that two pigs are gaining weight. Speaking of the food, her father eats strange food.
The food is jiggle. Do you know it?
B: Yes, I do. This is "Bawan". It is Taiwanese food.
A: Oh. I have never heard this word. I think "Bawan" resembles a jellyfish.
B: I have eaten it. But I don't like it because this is fatty food.
A:  Well... But I want to eat it. Her parents eat various foods. Many different foods appear in this movie. Most of them look delicious.
B: I have heard interesting story. At the  scene where her parents eat in food stall without permission, they say " I will pay when a shopkeeper come " to her. It is said that this words shows an adult is beside herself or himself with taking a strong interested in things which satisfied her or his wants.
A: Wow. In other words, this scene satirizes many adults who think there are no thing that we can't buy with money.
B: Yes.
A: This movie has many figurative expression. For example, the scene where her mother take up a cold attitude toward her. It shows modern mother. I will watch it while focusing them.
B: Me too. By the way, do you know a urban legend about it?
A: Yes, I do. When Chihiro rides a train, all rider's body is black and transparent. This means that they try to kill themselves and this train exclusively for someone like them.
B:  Oh.. It's horror. I guess she is saved because she get off the train.
A: Do you know another urban legend?
B: When she come back, Haku said "But you have to promise not to look back, not until you've passed through the tunnel " to her. If she had broken this promise, she would have become a daruma in front of the tunnel.
A: Wow. There are many  urban legends. Following it , let's watch "Spirited away " . I think that's all for today. Thank you for listening to KSU student podcast. We hope you have learned something new.

K: Oh, this year is the 20th anniversary! It sounds like a historic game.

D: But, at first, GAME FREAK didn't expect this game.

K: Really? Why didn't they expect it?

K: Wow! I didn't know that!

Episode 152: Sweets from Japan

Y: Hello. My name is Yuta. Please call me Yuta. Nice to meet you. This is KSU student Podcast.

A: Hello, Yuta. I’m Asuka. Please call me Asuka. Nice to meet you, too.

Y: Suddenly, where are you from, Asuka?

A: I’m from Nagoya, Aichi. How about you?

Y: I’m from Hirakata, Osaka. Hirakata has some sweets. I like Marui chizukeki in Daikokuya. We maybe call it “round cheese cake” in English.

A: Oh, it sounds delicious. What colors does it come in? It is yellow, isn’t it?

Y: I think we recognize that this color is white. I have eaten manju there, but I have not eaten a round cheese cake. If I have a chance, I would eat it. I think this food is very delicious and soft. When I put cheese cake in my mouth, it melts and it’s very very …………… delicious!!

A: I would like to have it, too. How much is it?

Y: It’s about one thousand yen included tax.

A: Sounds great!!

Y: How about your local sweets?

A: Umm…… . I think “Oshirukosand” is the most popular in Aichi.

Y:  “Oshirukosand” ?? What is it?

A: The sweetened bean paste are azuki beans made in Hokkaido. Including, apple jam and honey. So, they are wrapped in cookie dough. It is a taste which hasn’t changed for many years.  Sweetened bean taste is a little sweet and cookies are a perfect salty taste. It is very good!!

Y: That’s wonderful. I want to eat it as soon as possible.

A: I want you to eat it soon, too.

Y: I think there are a lot of sweets all over the world.

A: I think so, too.

Y: For example, “pancake” in Japanese. “pan cake” is maybe the most famous sweets in Hawaii, I think. It’s because when I went to Hawaii on high school trip, I saw it many times. For example, in a café, at a stand and so on.

A: Oh, really?? I have never been to Hawaii, so I didn’t know that.

Y: I see a lot of “pancakes” with toppings. For example, some cream, some strawberries, jam, blueberry, bananas, chocolate sauce and so on. There are a lot of kinds of toppings.  When I saw it first, I was surprised to see it. It’s a miracle!

A: Ah… I’m interested in them. However, the sweets which I will introduce are very good!

Y: Well, What is it? I think that “pancake” is the best sweets of all sweats in the world.

A: You are foolish, aren’t you? The thing which I ‘m going to explain is better than your sweats. I’m going to introduce “kakigoori” made in Japan. This is called “Shaved ice” in English.

Y: The shaved ice exists only in Japan, doesn’t it?

A: No. Actually, Korea has it, too. The shaved ice is called “Paapins” in Korea. “Paa” means “Azuki” in Japanese and “Pins” means “water with ice in it” in English.

Y: I’m interested in “Paapins”. Please tell me more about it.
A: Yes. Next, I’m going to teach how to eat it. When you eat “Paapins”, you stir the shaved ice.

Y: Japanese shaved ice is usually eaten by from top to bottom in Japan, isn’t it?

A: Umm…… . I think so, too.

Y: I think it’s strange……….

A: This food looks bad, but the taste is very good. I want you to eat it.

Y: Certainly… I think it is good. I’d like to have it.

A: By the way, which sweets do you think are the best all over the world? In other words, what’s your favorite type of sweets?

Y: Umm……. It’s a difficult question for me to answer. Umm…………. I’ve decided!! I think I love ”Matcha” in Japan very much. This is called “powdered green tea” in English. Recently, I would like to eat powdered green tea sweets in specialty store and I can find a specialty store.

A: Where is specialty store around Kyoto?

Y: I think “Machakann” is the best because there are specialty store for powdered green tea.

A: Really? What food can you see and eat?

Y:  For example, originally powdered green tea with ”wagashi”, shaved ice with powdered green tea, Powdered green tea cleamrate,  frozen powdered green tea, tiramisu with powdered green tea made in Uji and so on.

A: I wish I could eat them. All the food is very delicious, isn’t it?

Y: I don’t know about that because I have never been to “Macahakan”. However, I would like to go there.

A; Wow…. I want to take you to this place!

Y: I’d love to!

A: Let me introduce my favorite sweets. I want to introduce “tsubo purin” in Japanese. That is made in Kobe.

Y: Really? I haven’t heard about it. What is it?

A: It’s in a cup (tsubo). It looks like cream.

Y: Ah…. It’s a miracle.

A: I don’t remember eating it, but I think this pudding is the best in the world.

Y: It sounds yummy. How much is it?

A: I think it is a little expensive.

Y: When you eat it, this flavor spreads bigger and bigger. These tastes are Caramel, Cream and Custard especially. This food includes three tastes are far matching.

Y: I would like to eat it and experience it like you.

Y: You’re welcome, Asuka.

A: Thank you for listening and your introduction, Yuta.

Y: You’re welcome, Asuka. I’m also thankful to you!

A: That’s all for today. Thanks for listening!!

Episode 157: Unique Places to Visit in Kyoto

This is KSU student podcast.

①Hi,Naohiro.
②Hi,Aki.
①What are you doing now?
②I am looking for a recommended spot in Kyoto.
①Why is that?
②My friend will come to Kyoto next week. So, I am looking for a great spot.
①Oh, that's nice. Can I help you?
②Really? I appreciate it! Are there any places you recommend?
①My favorite place is “Roumatsu”. This place of sweets and “warabimochi” is very good! That was the best warabimochi I've ever had. So, it's recommend very much.
② It must be delicious. Where is it?
①It is in Arashiyama. Arashiyama is peak of the autumn leaves. So, I think it's just right to see them.
②That's nice. But, that place is basic. Do you have any other good places?
①Hum...Let me see... How about “Yasui Konpira-gu”?
②Yasui Kopira-gu?
①Yes.
②What is that place?
①You are able to disengage yourself from an evil. And you can find a good match. The couple is made an example. A boy thought about breaking up with his girlfriend. But he couldn't say good-bye to her because, he didn't have the courage. So he went there and he prayed. Then after a few days, she said good-bye to him. His wish came true after a few days. And he got a new lover immediately. This place is not well known. But there is a hidden popular spot.
②That's interesting! I want to find a good match. Where is that?
①This place is near Gion. Gion is a very popular spot. So, I hope that you go sometime.
②It may be circled in a lot of tourist spots! Do you have anything else?
①There is one more recommendation. It is “Teradaya”. Do you know it?
②Yes, I do. The place where Ryoma Sakamoto fought!
①That's right. He is a very famous man. There is the site of “Teradaya Incident” in 1862.
②Teradaya is a long-established inn where, Ryoma Sakamoto stayed regularly in the Edo.
①Yes. It's still used as accommodations. Did you know that?
②Oh really? I didn't know.
①There is also a lot of materials. So, you can enjoy.
②If we can stay there, it's very fun!
①I think so,too.
②Thank you for making many suggestions. I can guide my friend to a interesting place. I'll make a trip schedule right away.
①I'm glad to hear that. Have a nice time!
②Thanks! That's all for today. Bye!
①Bye!

Episode 156: Mohs Scale of Hardness

A: This is KSU student podcast. My name is Kotaro and this is Koji.

B: Today, we have an interesting topic. Kotaro, do you know what material is the hardest in the world?

A: Of course! It’s Diamond!

B: Ah, I suspected you’d say so! First of all, can you explain what hardness is?

A: …A scale of durability against shock?

B: No. Hardness, Mohs scale of hardness, says that “Hardness is a degree of durability against scratches.”, so it’s not a scale of toughness.

A: You mean that diamond is the most difficult material to scratch, but it doesn’t mean that diamond is the toughest material. However, I cannot imagine a material that has high hardness, but weak to shock.

B: OK. For example, you can break glass by your hand, but when you scratch your hand with glass, you get wounded.

A: That makes sense! By the way, what mineral is tougher than diamond? Famous one, please.

B: Hmm…In famous minerals, jade or ruby or… Others are not famous.

A: Then, what is the toughest material in the world?

B: It’s carbonado, known as black diamond. It consists for minute particle of diamond. Jade and ruby have 80% hardness of carbonado, and diamond has 75%. It’s expensive because of its rarity, but cheaper than diamond, because usually we don’t use it for accessories.

A: I see. In the end, the hardest material is black diamond. It consists of diamond, doesn’t it?

B: Actually, no.

A: Then, what is that?

B: It’s carbyne. It consists of carbon, the as same as diamond, but the carbon atoms are connected like a chain.

A: How hard is it?

B: About 3 times as hard as diamond.

A: Wow, these facts are very interesting to me! Can I tell you one thing about diamond?

B: Of course!

A: We wear white gloves and use tweezers when we touch diamond, did you know that?

B: Yeah. I’ve seen it on TV shopping!

A: Then, do you know why they do so?

B: I don’t know. Why?

A: Diamond absorb oil easily, so we wear groves and use tweezers to prevent making them dirty with our hands.

B: That’s interesting! Diamonds have many characteristics.

A: I think that’s all for today. Thanks for listening to KSU Student Podcast. We hope you have learned something new.

Episode 155: Local Food from Nagano and Kyoto

A: Hello. I’m Kaho and this is Yuma. This is KSU student podcast.

B: Hi, Kaho. What are you doing?

A: Hi, Yuma. Now I’m researching about local foods.

B: It sounds good. Well, where is your hometown?

A: Nagano prefecture.

B: Then, please talk about Nagano local food.

A: Ok. Umm, oh do you know “Oyaki”?

B: Yes, I have heard the name, but I don’t know a lot about that. Please teach me.

A: Of course. “Oyaki” is one of the local foods of Nagano prefecture. It looks like Manju. Oyaki is wrapped vegetables or pickles filling with dough which made from wheat flour or soba flour. We have a lot of snow in Nagano, so the amount of yield from the rice crop were not good. So we wrap the vegetables in soba instead of rice.

B: I didn’t know about it.

A: And even the way of cooking Oyaki is different from location to location.

B: Thank you for teaching me about something.

A: You’re welcome.

B: Well, do you know any traditional dishes of Kyoto?

A: I know Yatsuhashi, Hamo’s dishes and Tsukemono. But I don’t know the details. Please tell me about these.

B: OK. Today, I’ll introduce you to Hamo’s dishes. It has a lot of tradition, so it’s very interesting. At first, what do you think of Hamo’s menu?

A: I know Yuriki and Tempura. Come to think it, why is hamo’s sliced so thinly?

B: Because Hamo has many small bones. If you cut it differenly, you can’t eat it.

A: I see. Thank you for answer my question.

B: No problem. Next, I tell you menu which uses hamo as traditional dishes. Do you know Kyoto people eat it before the Gion Festival?

A: No. What is the reason?

B: Gion Festival is held in July. In summer, Kyoto’s old people can’t eat other fish because Kyoto is far from the sea. Other fish die and go bad because of the heat. But Hamo can live, so people can eat it fresh. This tradition continues until now.

A: I see. I want to eat it next summer. Do you know restaurants that we can eat Hamo?

B: Yes. Let’s eat it together next summer.

This is our podcast. Thank you for listening.
