Episode 088 - Japanese Sweets vs. American Sweets

Miyu:    This is KSU Student Podcast. My name is Miyu and this is Moeko. Hello, Moeko.

Moeko:  Hi, Miyu. Oh, what is this?

Miyu:    This is an American dessert. This cake is very delicious! Do you want to taste it?

Moeko:  No, I don’t…it’s so colorful that it looks poisonous.

Miyu:    In America, It is not surprising when desserts are decorated with colorful chocolates, candies, and gummies.

Moeko:  On the contrary, Japanese desserts have too natural of a color. Japanese desserts don’t contain any extra ingredients.

Miyu:    Yes. There is a just reason that American desserts are colorful. America has many events around the year.

Moeko:  I know. For example, Halloween, Easter, and many more.

Miyu:    American people like to hold parties on such events. Colorful desserts make them happy, don’t they?

Moeko:  That’s right. Also, in Japan, we can enjoy a variety of desserts throughout the seasons. Japanese people consider “Shun” important.

Miyu:    What do you mean by “Shun”?

Moeko:  “Shun” means that food tastes best in the matching season.

Miyu:    I see. That’s a good tradition!

Moeko:  I think that’s all for today.  Tell me more next time.

Miyu:    Of course.  Thanks for listening to KSU Student Podcast.

Moeko:  We hope you have learned something new.

S: Hello. My name is Yuta. Please call me Yuta. Nice to meet you. This is KSU student podcast.

F: Hello, Yuta. I’m Yukiya. Please call me Yukiya. Nice to meet you, too.

S: Where are you from, Yukiya?

F: I’m from Mouka, Tochigi. This is in the southeast area of Tochigi. How about you?

S: I’m from Hirakata, Osaka. This is in the northeast area of Osaka. Do you live in a town or the countryside?

F: Umm…. Maybe I think countryside. There are a lot of trees around my town and it is an abundant place naturally. There is much nature and no light because there are no stores around there.  You can see a lot of stars shining in a clean empty sky in the evening. It’s in the mountains, so this landscape changes every season. There are many things to do to enjoy oneself there. Also, you can see the beautiful sky at night.

S: Please tell me about watching the stars?

F: Yes, of course. The place has absolutely no lights. It takes 20 minutes to drive and you’ll be able to see a starry sky.

S: Is that so? I envy you. Please bring me there sometime. Hirakata is a town around Hirakata station, but the station suburb is countryside. My town is not as beautiful landscape as yours town. There is a convenience store, a restaurant and a supermarket near my house. So, I can’t see a lot of stars. But, Hirakata has an amusement park that is called “HIRAKATA PARK”. Sometimes it is called “Hirapa”. There are about 35 kinds of attractions, for example a roller coaster, a Ferris wheel and a coffee cup ride.

F: It sounds like fun. I want to go there. I also want you to go to my town.

S: I want to go to your city, too. By the way, have you been to the sea? Tochigi is a landlocked prefecture, isn’t it?

F: Yes, I have. But, I don’t remember it because I was a child. I think that the place was called Awa island.

S: Where is Awa Island?

F: It is in Niigata.

S: Oh, I see. I have been to the sea, too. I also went to Awaji Island in Hyogo.

F: What is the name of the coast?

S: The coast’s name is “Oohama Beach. Osaka has a lot of factories near Osaka bay, and there are few beaches. So, I don’t think I want to go there very much.

F: I see. Were Mt. Fuji and Tomioka spinning place registered with the world's cultural and natural heritage recently? Does your prefecture have World Heritage sites?

S: No, it doesn’t. But, my prefecture has a castle. Its name is Osaka Castle. This castle was built by Toyotomi Hideyoshi about four hundred years ago. This castle has a long history.

F: Really? In my province, Tochigi shrines and temples in Nikko have been registered as a World Heritage Sites!! For example, the Tosho-gu shrine positive light gate, picture of the “three monkeys” of forced hear , have to say, forced to look and so on. I would admire it very much.

S: How nice!! I would like to go there.

F: It would be nice.

S: So, what is the famous food in Tochigi?

F: Dumplings and strawberries, in particular, but all the food is very delicious.

S: Wait!! I’ve heard that “SHIMOTSUKARE” is called local cuisine of Tochigi. I think the food has an extremely bad appearance.

F: Certainly the appearance is bad, but I think it is very tasty. However, some people in Tochigi hate it.

S: I see. The famous foods in my province are takoyaki, Kansai style Okonomiyaki, Fried pork and spring onions on skewers and so on. They are delicious, too.

F: Wow. I want to try to eat them.

S: Me too.

F: Come hang out in Tochigi, Yuta!!

ï¼´: Hello, welcome to KSU student podcast. My name is Tomoka.

N: My name is Naho.

T: How are you, Naho?

N: I'm fine. How are you?

T: Very good. We are going to talk about Ghibli movies. I really like Ghibli movies.

N: Me too. Many famous actors are connected with Ghibli movies as a voice actor. Did you know about that?

T: Yes, I know. For example, Kimura Takuya acted as Hauru's voice. He really matched the cast.

N: Actors and actresses have never experienced voice recording. Their play has something attractive because they are inexperienced people. So, everyone wants to watch Ghibli movies.

T: Do you know who was cast as Alen in "Gedo Senki"?

N: No, I don't. Who?

T: His name is Okada Junichi. He is a member of V6.

N: Oh, really? I have never heard that.

T: When we know the cast we have a new way of enjoying the movie.

N: That's right. I recommend that you search Internet for people who acted as the character.

T: That's nice idea! I think when we know the cast we feel that it is more fun.

N: Please try to search for voice actors and watch Ghibli movies.

A: Sure! I'm interested in them too!

H: Do you know anything about Korean culture?

A: Umm.. I know Korean people call their old brothers or sisters Oppa or Eon ni. I've heard it when I watched a Korean drama.

H: Yeah. That’s right. They call their older bother, Oppa, and their older sister, Eon ni, but only girls can say these words.

A: Really? So, how about boys? What do boys call them?

H: They call their older brothers, Hyeong, and their older sisters, Nuna.

R: Riku S: Shimon

S: This is KSU Student Podcast. Hi, Riku! Long time no see!

R: Oh, hi Shimon! Ah, today you didn’t put on your glass, what’s up?

S: Oh, I stopped wearing glass and started wearing contact lens, because I started playing tennis.

R: I see! But it looks difficult. I feel fear when I put them in.

S: Certainly, I was afraid at first, but it became comfortable gradually.

R: Really? But glasses have many good points.
First, they are easier to wear than contacts.

S: Glasses are easy to put on, but my vision is narrow. If you put on contacts, you can see every angle.

R: I see. But I think contacts are bad for your eyes’ health. I have heard the news that people lose their eyesight because of contacts.

S: That sounds bad. Certainly contacts can become dirty and bad for your health, so you should take care of them carefully.

R: Glasses and contacts have many good points and bad points. I have considered both positions, I will continue wearing glasses.

S: I think so too. It is important to choose according to your likes and dislikes.

R: That’s all for today. Thanks for listening to KSU Student Podcast. We hope you learned something new.
